As the campaign for the 2024 election begins to gain momentum, President Joe Biden faces a challenging political landscape marked by slipping approval ratings and stiff competition from former President Donald Trump, according to recent polls conducted by The New York Times/Siena College and Quinnipiac University.
The latest Times/Siena poll reveals a significant decline in President Biden’s approval rating, with only a quarter of the nation’s voters expressing satisfaction with the direction of the country. More than twice as many voters believe Biden’s policies have personally harmed them rather than helped them, while a majority expresses dissatisfaction with the state of the economy.
President Biden’s disapproval rating has surged to 47%, the highest of his presidency, with particular weakness observed in his ability to consolidate support among Democratic base voters, including women, Black, and Latino voters. While 83% of respondents who voted for Biden in 2020 intend to do so again, a notable 10% now express intentions to support Trump.
On key issues, concerns about the situation at the southern border loom large, with 78% of respondents describing it as an emergency or major problem. While 82% attribute the crisis to Congressional inaction, 51% of Biden’s own party hold him responsible for not enforcing existing laws. Overall, a majority of respondents blame Congress for the border situation, with 72% pointing fingers at President Biden.
However, a Quinnipiac poll offers a more nuanced picture, showing Biden maintaining a slight edge over Trump among registered voters, albeit with diminishing support since January. While 49% of respondents support Biden, 45% express support for Trump. The poll also delves into perceptions of the candidates’ ethics, care for average Americans, and temperament, revealing mixed opinions among voters.
While 49% of respondents believe Biden possesses the ethics necessary for the presidency, 51% question his temperament and personality. Conversely, 29% believe Trump is ethical, while 37% consider him temperamentally fit for office.
The polls underscore the complex challenges facing President Biden as he prepares to deliver his State of the Union address. Despite successes such as the passage of key legislation and the management of domestic and international crises, concerns about the economy, immigration, and leadership remain prominent among voters.
