Human Rights Day : Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) falls on December 10, 2023. This historic global commitment, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on the same date in 1948, asserts the inherent rights that every individual possesses, irrespective of factors such as race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.

For the first time, the UDHR outlines fundamental human rights that should be universally safeguarded. It stands as the most translated document globally, available in over 500 languages.

A year-long initiative, centered on themes of universality, progress, and engagement, will reach its culmination in December 2023 with a high-level event. This event aims to unveil global commitments and present innovative ideas for shaping the future vision of human rights.

Since the establishment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, there has been a growing acknowledgment and global assurance of human rights over the ensuing decades. The UDHR has become the cornerstone for an expanding framework of human rights protection, extending its focus to encompass vulnerable groups like individuals with disabilities, indigenous communities, and migrants.

Nevertheless, the commitment outlined in the UDHR, which promises dignity and equal rights, has faced sustained challenges in recent years. In the midst of contemporary issues such as pandemics, conflicts, escalating inequalities, a morally compromised global financial system, racism, and climate change, the values and rights articulated in the UDHR serve as guiding principles for collective action, emphasizing the inclusion of all individuals.

The year-long Human Rights 75 initiative aims to transform the understanding and response to the UDHR, fostering greater awareness of its universality and the associated activism.
