Sydney Bernice Sweeney, born on September 12, 1997, is an acclaimed American actress known for her standout performances in the HBO drama series Euphoria (2019–present) and the initial season of the anthology series The White Lotus (2021). Her remarkable acting skills earned her nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards in 2022.

Sweeney initially gained recognition through roles in television series like Everything Sucks! (2018), The Handmaid’s Tale (2018), and the limited series Sharp Objects (2018). In 2019, she made an appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2023, she received acclaim for her portrayal of Reality Winner in the film Reality.

Born in Spokane, Washington, to Lisa and Steven Sweeney, she grew up in northwestern Idaho, surrounded by a religious family. Sweeney attended Saint George’s School in Spokane, engaging in various sports and excelling academically. Her interest in acting developed after auditioning for an independent film in Spokane, and she convinced her parents to support her acting endeavors with a well-thought-out business plan.

Sweeney commenced her career with guest appearances on TV shows like 90210, Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, and Pretty Little Liars. She played Emaline Addario in the Netflix series Everything Sucks! and had a recurring role in the HBO miniseries Sharp Objects.

 

Her career continued to flourish with roles in the thriller film Under the Silver Lake (2018), the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale, and the horror film Along Came the Devil. Sweeney’s breakthrough came with her role as Cassie Howard in the HBO drama series Euphoria, earning her critical acclaim and a Primetime Emmy nomination.

In 2021, Sweeney shone in the first season of The White Lotus, receiving praise and another Emmy nomination. In 2023, her performance as Reality Winner in the thriller drama Reality garnered critical acclaim at the Berlin Film Festival.

Sweeney is also recognized for founding the production company Fifty-Fifty Films in 2020. She has appeared in various projects, including the TV film Nocturne (2020) and the crime thriller Americana (2023). Additionally, she is set to star in the superhero film Madame Web, the romantic comedy Anyone but You, and the psychological horror film Immaculate, while also featuring in the music video for the Rolling Stones’ single “Angry” in 2023.
